Joomla is proud to announce that it has been officially recognized as a digital public good (DPG) by the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA), an initiative supported by the United Nations. This distinction places Joomla! among a select group of international open-source projects committed to openness, transparency, data protection, and social impact.
Importantly, the DPG recognition applies to Joomla! as a digital solution, not to the Joomla organization itself.
The Digital Public Goods Alliance maintains an international registry of digital public goods and evaluates projects based on clearly defined standards. Its mission is to promote open-source solutions that advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and address global development challenges.
To be recognized as a digital public good, projects must meet the Digital Public Goods Standard, which includes requirements such as:
- Open licensing, e.g., recognized open-source licenses
- Data protection and security
- Compliance with legal and ethical standards
- Contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
- Transparent governance and long-term sustainability
- Strong community engagement
Earning recognition as a digital public good is far from automatic. Joomla went through an extensive review process that required detailed documentation and proof of compliance with strict standards.
Thanks to the dedication of many community contributors, the result is a clear demonstration of Joomla’s versatility and openness, as well as the countless ways it empowers people to build the web.
This milestone underscores Joomla’s position as one of the world’s most trusted and adaptable open-source CMS platforms, a system that continues to empower developers, organisations, and governments to build open, secure and inclusive digital solutions.
If you are not yet experienced with Joomla, now might be the perfect time to get started and take a first look at our great software. The community is looking forward to welcoming you.
