This Cookie Policy applies to the websites/domains which are owned and managed by the Joomla Project:

  • joomla.org and its subdomains
  • opensourcematters.org
  • joomlacode.org

The Websites above are operated by Open Source Matters, Inc. (“Joomla”, "us", "we", or "our") and use cookies. (collectively the "Site").

Our Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, how we use cookies, how third-parties we partner with may use cookies on the Site, and which are your choices regarding cookies. Please read this Cookie Policy in conjunction with our Privacy Policy, which sets out additional details on how we store and process your personal data and your various rights.

What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that a website saves via the browser on your computer or mobile device when you visit the site.

Why do we use cookies?

They enable the website to remember your actions and preferences (such as login details, local language and/or other display preferences) over a period of time, so you don’t have to keep re-entering them whenever you come back to the site or browse from one page to another. Additionally, it allows the Site or a third-party to recognize you, while making your next visit easier and the Site more useful to you. Sometimes we may use tracking pixels, which are small graphic files linked to our servers that allow us to track your usage over our Site and on related functionalities. Cookies and tracking pixels allow us to serve you better and more efficiently, and to personalize your experience on our Site.

Categories of cookies that Joomla’s properties use

When you use and access the Site, we use a cookie bar that will inform you about the use of cookies in our websites and you would be able to accept or change your preferences regarding the use of cookies.

The Joomla Project uses both session and persistent cookies on it’s Site and it uses different types of cookies to run the Site.

Essential cookies

Strictly necessary cookies are essential for the operation of the Site in order to enable you to move around the website and use its features, such as accessing secure areas, authenticating users and preventing fraudulent use of user accounts. Without these cookies, the Site may not be fully functional. We use the following strictly necessary cookies on our Site:

Non-essential cookies: Performance Cookies

Performance cookies help The Joomla Project improve the way our Site works. We use Google Analytics cookies to collect information about how visitors use our website. These cookies collect information about how visitors use a website, for instance which pages are visitors more often visit, and if they get error messages from any web pages. We anonymize IP addresses in Google Analytics, and the anonymized data is transmitted to and stored by Google on its servers. As a result these cookies don’t collect information that identifies a visitor. It is only used to improve how a website works.

Non-essential cookies: Functionality cookies.

Functionality cookies are used to recognise you when you return to our Site. This allows us to personalise the content for you, greet you by name, and remember your preferences (for example, your choice of language or region). Also they can be used to provide more personal services like to present feeds or/and iframes by third parties.

Advertising/Targeting cookies

Advertising/Targeting cookies limit the number of times you see an advertisement and measure the effectiveness of our digital advertising campaigns. They are also used to deliver more relevant adverts according to your interests. They allow you to limit the number of times an ad is displayed to you and help measure the effectiveness of the advertising campaign. They are usually placed by advertising networks with the website operator’s permission. They are also used to remember that you have visited a website, and this information is shared with other organisations such as advertisers. Quite often advertising or targeting cookies will be linked to site functionality provided by the other organisation. In any case, the third party ads providers have been evaluated and act under the requirements of the GDPR.

What are your choices regarding cookies

We do not require that you accept non-essential cookies. If you do accept our use of non-essential cookies, you can withdraw your consent or adjust your browser’s privacy settings at any time. Please note that blocking of essential cookies may cause some of the Sites’ functionality to not be available.

We plan to release a tool to control cookies on our websites soon. The tool will allow you to accept / delete all the cookies saved by any of the joomla.org websites.

Using your browser

Moreover, if you'd like to delete cookies or instruct your web browser to delete or refuse cookies, please visit the help center of your web browser. Please mention that if you do this, you may have to manually adjust some preferences every time you visit a site and some services or/and some functionalities may not work.

Each browser provides help pages that help you manage cookies in their products. To disable cookies through your browser, follow the instructions usually located within the “Help,” “Tools” or “Edit” menus in your browser, or see detailed information on how to do this via the AboutCookies.org guide.

Joomla! means “all together”. Inclusion is in our heart. As a community, we accept and welcome everyone. We are committed to being accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of ability or technology.

There are two main areas where we are focusing our efforts: the Joomla! CMS and Framework as our “product” and our websites - www.joomla.org, the Joomla Organisation and all of our subdomain sites.

Joomla! CMS, Framework and extensions

Joomla! aims to be an accessible authoring tool and provide a solid out of the box base for building accessible websites.

Since the birth of Joomla, we have made efforts to make our software meet accessibility requirements.

With Joomla! 4, we conform with the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) guidelines: WCAG 2.1 and ATAG 2.0. The Joomla Backend ensures full accessibility. Every person, with or without disability, can use Joomla to create, administer and maintain accessible sites. We give you the tools, the rest is up to you!

While Joomla! enables the creation of accessible WCAG 2.1 AA-level sites, it is up to those building individual sites to implement their own site in an accessible way. To put it another way, we will give you an accessible base install, but it will be up to you to ensure it is still accessible at the end of the build.

Joomla.org website and subdomains

We are aware that our own websites do not currently meet accessibility guidelines. We are actively working to fix this, and aim for our properties to also meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards. We will update this statement when this has been achieved.

Joomla! Accessibility Team (JAT)

Accessibility, much like security, is a constantly evolving journey. Accessibility has to be taken care of constantly. We aim to make the Joomla ecosystem a beacon for accessibility in the digital world by providing Joomla as a fully accessible foundation, as well as providing tools and information for accessibility standards and processes. The members of this team are dedicated to accessibility. They have many years of experience, in theory and in practice, as auditors, users, developers and continue to learn and explore techniques.

If you would like to volunteer or contribute to our team in any way, we would love to welcome you on board! Please join us or contact us on Volunteers Portal.

How to report a problem or suggestion

If you find a bug or something that isn't working for you, please tell us.
We are happy to receive every hint and invite you to work with us to improve our software. Please report on our Issue Tracker or on github. If you are on github, use the Accessibility issue template for reporting an issue.

If you would like to report an issue about any of our *.joomla.org sites, please click on the "Report an issue" link located in the footer of that website. Our dedicated volunteers will address any issues as soon as humanly possible, accessibility issues have high priority.

The Joomla! Accessibility Disclaimer

The Joomla! Project is not responsible for compliance with the standards of accessibility of applications and extensions created with and/or for the Joomla! CMS and Framework but is committed to making changes to the Joomla! CMS so that the available applications, extensions, and web sites have a solid foundation in keyboard support, focus support, ARIA markup and other assistive technologies.

hCaptcha

We use the hCaptcha anti-bot service (hereinafter "hCaptcha") on our website. This service is provided by Intuition Machines, Inc., a Delaware US Corporation ("IMI"). hCaptcha is used to check whether the data entered on our website (such as on a login page or contact form) has been entered by a human or by an automated program. To do this, hCaptcha analyzes the behavior of the website or mobile app visitor based on various characteristics. This analysis starts automatically as soon as the website or mobile app visitor enters a part of the website or app with hCaptcha enabled. For the analysis, hCaptcha evaluates various information (e.g. IP address, how long the visitor has been on the website or app, or mouse movements made by the user). The data collected during the analysis will be forwarded to IMI.

hCaptcha analysis in the "invisible mode" may take place completely in the background. Website or app visitors are not advised that such an analysis is taking place if the user is not shown a challenge. Data processing is based on Art. 6(1)(f) of the GDPR (DSGVO): the website or mobile app operator has a legitimate interest in protecting its site from abusive automated crawling and spam. IMI acts as a "data processor" acting on behalf of its customers as defined under the GDPR, and a "service provider" for the purposes of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). For more information about hCaptcha and IMI's privacy policy and terms of use, please visit the following links: https://hcaptcha.com/privacy/ and https://hcaptcha.com/terms
