iJoomla.com, a leading developer of Joomla! software, is pleased to announce that it has developed a free modification to Joomla! that can simplify the way that users can recover their password from Joomla! sites. One of the great things about Joomla! is that because it is an open source environment, it is possible to make modifications to the core code in order to change or improve certain features of Joomla!. iJoomla has had many requests from its users to find a way to change the way Joomla! handles recovery of forgotten passwords. iJoomla has responded to these user requests and is pleased to contribute its solution to the Joomla! community. This modification to Joomla! affects the way the "forgot password" feature works in the standard Joomla! core code. Currently, if a user forgets their password for a site Joomla! requires the user to enter both their username and email in order to retrieve the password. With the iJoomla modification to Joomla!, users will only be asked to enter the email address that they used when they created their account, and both their username and password will be sent to them at that email address. According to iJoomla founder Merav Knafo, "We know that some people have a hard time remembering both their username and email, because many people have dozens of different logins for all the various sites they use. We get a lot of support requests from our users asking for help with this problem, which is related to Joomla!, not our products. We developed this Joomla! hack in response to their needs." Although web site security is an important issue, iJoomla feels that it is fairly safe to only ask users for their email address when they need to recover a lost or forgotten password. This is because the password can only be sent to the email address that the user specified when they first created the original password. Users can download the iJoomla password recovery hack at: http://www.ijoomla.com/option,com_docman/task,cat_view/gid,75/Itemid,505/ This modification was developed for Joomla! version 1.1.12. iJoomla doesn't provide any support for this hack and doesn't make any guarantees or warranties, but wanted to make it freely available to interested members of the Joomla! community.
